Ford, GM Join Others in Making Up for Lost Federal ZEV Rebate

Following Hyundai, Volkswagen and Nissan, which earlier this week said they would make up for the abrupt suspension of the Canadian government’s Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program, Ford and General Motors have decided to do the same.

The two are introducing a manufacturer incentive for eligible vehicles sold between January 13-31, 2025 in order to support customers through the transition. The rebate will end starting February 1—similar to Quebec’s own provincial incentive, as announced last month.

Here’s the breakdown:

Over at GM, a new $5,000 rebate covers the missing federal incentive for eligible Chevrolet Equinox EV, Blazer EV and Cadillac Optiq models.

“Ultimately, the mass adoption of electric vehicles by Canadians requires robust support in the form of consumer incentives from government, continued increase in public and home charging infrastructure, and widespread education about the benefits of electric vehicles and related technologies. Without these measures, Canadians are reluctant to make the switch,” Ford said in a statement.

With the abrupt suspension of the iZEV program expected to negatively impact sales of electric vehicles, Ford is urging Ottawa to reinstate incentives as soon as possible. However, given that the Liberals don’t have a leader right now and that a change in government is likely to occur maybe as early as this spring, don’t get your hopes up.

More automakers could be announcing incentives in the coming days. We’ll keep you posted.
