1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche IV Owned by Wayne Gretzky Now Up for Sale

As you probably know, Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 goals was broken by Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals last Sunday. But get this: one of his old cars will soon be auctioned off under the supervision of RM Sotheby's.

And not just any car: the 1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche IV that Gretzky received as a gift from the Los Angeles Kings a few days after scoring his 802nd career goal and breaking Gordie Howe's previous record. It was on March 30, 1994 at a special ceremony held at center ice before a game against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

“I really do feel a little embarrassed standing here getting this car this evening. It's overwhelming, but I’ll take it,” The Great One told the crowd that night.

If you've never heard of the Corniche, just remember this: Rolls-Royce produced just 219 units of the fourth generation from 1992 to 1995. The prestigious British luxury convertible features a 6.75-litre V8 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

We don’t know how much Gretzky drove his, which sports various “Goal 802” tags, but the odometer reads 9,107 miles, or the equivalent of 14,656 km. Likewise, it is not currently known how long the car remained in his possession. However, it was acquired by a collector based in Indian Wells, California in early 2016, then passed to another collector in Massachusetts in 2023.

In the summer of last year, the car was treated to a full mechanical evaluation and commensurate service attention by the O’Gara Coach Company of Beverly Hills, returning the car to its original selling dealer for optimal consistency and factory-approved technique. Also in 2024, the Corniche IV received a thorough cosmetic detailing and rejuvenation in Costa Mesa, California.

The elegant black body is adorned with vermillion pinstripes, chrome mirrors and a tinted windshield. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black leather upholstery with burled walnut veneers, a grey headliner and black Wilton carpets.

According to RM Sotheby's, this 1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche IV once owned by Wayne Gretzky could be worth some $1.2 million CAD. However, it will be sold without reserve and may not fetch such a hefty sum. We'll have the answer on April 17. In the meantime, take a look at the photo gallery at the top of the page to admire the car from every angle.
