GM Has Now Sold 370,000 EVs in the U.S. and Canada Since 2016
While Tesla continues to rule the North American EV market, the battle for second place—or first place among legacy automakers—is rather fascinating to watch. At the moment, General Motors finds itself in that position.
Helped by a strong progression in Q3 2024, GM has now sold over 300,000 EVs in the United States since the launch of the Chevrolet Bolt EV back in 2016 (Tesla took about five years to reach that mark, although with far fewer competitors). Across the continent, meaning with Canada included, GM has sold more than 370,000 EVs.

The following graph shows GM’s EV sales growth over the past eight years:
Despite many production and factory delays, we can see a clear spike between 2022 and now. The Bolt EV (including the Bolt EUV) had a record year in 2023, and GM made up for its departure with the launch of several new models. As many as eight are currently on sales:
- Cadillac Lyriq
- Cadillac Celestiq
- Chevrolet Blazer EV
- Chevrolet Equinox EV
- Chevrolet Silverado EV
- GMC Hummer EV
- GMC Hummer EV SUV
- GMC Sierra EV
The Cadillac Escalade IQ and Optiq will soon join the list, followed by the Cadillac Vistiq. Buick remains the only GM brand without an EV.
The Equinox EV’s hot start is quite remarkable, especially here in Canada. Over 5,500 units were sold from July through September, which is more than the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E combined. The addition of a cheaper 1LT base model in early 2025 will make it even more attractive.
And don’t forget the return of the Bolt EV on a new platform (the one GM used to call Ultium up until recently) and with fresh styling—somewhere in late 2025 or early 2026. GM president Mark Reuss confirmed in mid-October that it will be the automaker’s most affordable EV and also hinted at an even lower-cost option.
